about

This song is inspired by a feeling of total inner freedom we catch glimpses of, maybe through meditation and in other moments of inspiration–a feeling of the heart expanding infinitely and none of the mind’s ego-centric nonsense can get in its way...

The theme 998 Bricks comes from a simple story told by a Buddhist monk Ajahn Brahm about when he built a wall in his monastery as a novice monk and couldn’t stop looking at the 2 crooked bricks in it, which he obsessed over and fantasized about destroying through all kinds of violent means…until someone else came and saw the wall and said

‘ah, what a beautiful wall!’

He could not believe someone would say such a thing…but realized the crooked bricks had expanded in his mind to such a degree that he couldn’t see the wall as a whole. The wall was actually perfectly decent and actually quite great once he looked at it properly

Sometimes all we can see is the two bad bricks

We also know the feeling of the heart being our guide in inspired moments of life, and when there is a lot of love it feels as though it stretches infinitely outwards beyond space and time, enveloping and embracing all that is, and we can’t believe we ever noticed those silly bricks. Can’t we just cultivate that feeling and break free for good?

We went for a live-feel for this track so got the most people involved! Full list of credits is below in the credits section.
